The student car-buying checklist

A history lookup is useful, but it does not replace an inspection, a careful test drive, or verifying the paperwork.

Set the real budget

Choose a total purchase limit before discussing monthly payments.
Estimate insurance, taxes, registration, fuel, tires, and near-term maintenance.
Write down the maximum price, payment, interest rate, and loan length you will accept.

Verify the vehicle and seller

Match the 17-character VIN on the dashboard, door label, title, and listing.
Confirm the seller's identity and right to transfer the title.
Check theft, salvage, flood, title-brand, recall, and available service-history information.

Inspect before the test drive

Ask to see a cold start; warning lights should illuminate and then turn off normally.
Look for leaks, uneven tire wear, damaged glass, mismatched paint, rust, and fluid problems.
Test lights, windows, locks, heat, air conditioning, electronics, brakes, and steering.

Slow down before paying

Arrange an independent inspection before a deposit or final signature.
Get the complete out-the-door price and every fee in writing.
Do not sign blank documents, accept verbal-only promises, or send money under artificial urgency.
